Going to India? Check this following info for “Things to buy in India”. This includes items which are cheaper in India. Also includes things which are harder to get in the USA.
Women’s ethic wear – In India check out your local stores for women’s ethnic wear. That includes “Sarees“, “Salwar suits“, “Anarkalis“, “Lehengas“, “Kurtis” and “Tops“. I don’t think anyone needs to remind women to go shopping, right? Married men, if you are travelling alone, then remember to get Indian clothes for your SO.
Men’s ethnic wear – Many men like to wear “Kurta Pajama“, “Dhoti & Angavastram“. So when in India remember to get some.
Kids ethnic wears – In India several types of stitched sarees are available. These are easy to wear and manage. Due to this, these are great for young girls. Also more types of ethic wear for kids are available in India.
Ethnic footwear – Ethnic footwear like “tradition chappals“, “kolhapuris” are also good to get in India. We can wear them for festivals. Also good to have for other cultural events, like “India day celebration” etc.
Tailored clothes – In the US it is quite costly to have clothes tailored. So while in India, don’t miss the opportunity to get clothes tailor made for you.
Jewelry – In the US gold jewelry is often of lesser purity. So good idea to get some gold jewelry of higher karat value. Also lots of choices to buy fashion jewelry, which includes necklaces, bangles and ear wear.
Beauty & Personal care – Women may like to get Indian beauty products like mehendi, bindi etc from India.
Spices – In the US name brand spices are widely available. But the local spices from India are a tad better. When we go to India we make a point to buy local-made spices like “garam masala”
Tea/Coffee – If you like tea then good idea to pick up some loose leaf tea, “Darjeeling tea” or your personal favorite. This applies to coffee lovers as well.
Local delicacies – Some snack/sweets made in India taste way better. For example many like “Sonpapdi” from India. My friends from Pune say that “Chitale bakarwadi” is much better there because it is fresh.
Grocery items – It is better to buy certain grocery items in India. We do not know the exact difference in “Sabudana” from India and the USA. We prefer the “Sabudana” from India. So if you have any such preferences, then remember to get that item in India.
Bedding – Indian style bed sheets and pillow covers are good to buy as well. One can use them make part of the home with complete Indian theme.
Handy craft items – Some handy craft and related items are – door hanging, key holders, wood carvings, marble items, coasters, sandalwood. One can also find these in special exhibitions or fairs.
Statues and pictures – We have got several statues and pictures of deity, so check that as well. Also small deity for cars.
Curtains – Many of our friends have got curtains from India. So much better bang for your buck. Just need to take all your measurements. Many places in India are familiar with the standard sizes in the US and do a good job.
Special decoration – Check out decoration items for special occasions for like Diwali.
Books & Music
books – Books are in general cheaper in India. Therefore it is a good idea to get books. If you like cooking, then get books by top chefs like “Sanjeev Kapoor“. Many such books are also available in several languages. Are you are going to do any Puja? If yes, then get books which give you step by step process to do common Pujas.
CDs – Although most music is available on the web, not all is available. Do you like something specific for example hard to find classical Indian music? Then those get CDs in India. Also for doing Pujas, if you think you will need it them CDs are also available.
Musical Instruments – For one trip we got a “Tabla set” in India. We got the “Tabla” with a nice box. Before our flight, we checked in that box as a luggage item. So bringing it to the US was easy. A “Harmonium” is also another musical item to get. Another popular item is “electronic Tanpura” and “electronic Tabla“. We have both of them. These days many phone and table apps are available for “Tabla” and “Tanpura” accompaniment.
Over the counter medicines – In general, over the counter medicines are cheaper in India. Therefore, it is a good idea to get some in India. For every trip we buy Himani, Amrutanjan, Kailas Jeevan and similar medicines in India.
Prescription medicines – Certain prescription medicines are way cheaper to get in India. For example allergy medicines are cheaper there. Many medical stores in India will sell you medicines without a prescription. But it is a good idea to carry a prescription.
Dentist – Depending on your insurance, going to a Dentist in India will be cheaper. Just needs to be planned out.
Prescription glasses – Do you/your family member in the US wears glasses? In US the insurance company often limits the choices of frames. Therefore, when visiting India check out the glasses. You will find unique varieties. Also easy to find affordable glasses. Remember to take a copy of your latest prescription.
